Join GoVertical's Drakensberg Mountain Hiking Guides for great day hiking trails in the Drakensberg South Africa. These Drakensberg day hikes can be done individually, more commonly the Amphitheatre hike & the World View trails are combined with a night's accommodation in the Drakensberg region to explore some of the varied splendour these mountains have to offer, no limits, we can combine any number of day hikes to fill your itinerary, just email us your request. We provide guides, meals, accommodation, park fees & adventure!

The spectacular Amphitheatre in the uKhahlamba World Heritage site, towers above Natal at 3000m above sea level. The Drakensberg escarpment's steep walls, great valleys and pinnacles face roughly East and the Lesotho Highlands fill the horizon to the West.

The trail passes the mighty Sentinel, the highest free standing peak in the Northern Drakensberg, contouring the way to the base of the chain ladders. We use these iron ladders to gain access to the Mont-Aux-Sources Plateau, source of many of South Africa's rivers including the Tugela which winds its way down to the Indian Ocean near Durban.

Splendid hiking in the magnificent Giants Castle Region of the Central Drakensberg, this day walk takes place at the base of the Drakensberg Mountains climbing to Worlds View 1842m offering spectacular vistas from Giants Castle to Champagne Castle.

From the Giants Castle Game Reserve, where it's possible you may encounter Eland, vultures and other wildlife we'll start the walk to Worlds View Peak. The trail leads round the base of Sugar loaf kop and along the Bushman
's River Valley.

Worlds View is the highest point above the Wildebeest Plateau and it is from here that you can enjoy one of the most extensive views of the Drakensberg. On a clear day the view extends from the colossal Giants Castle, includes Cathkin peak and stretches all the way to Champagne castle.

From the Royal Natal National Park we explore the Tugela Gorge with its massive overhangs & beautiful rock pools. This trail exposes tremendous views when you gaze up at the Sentinel, Amphitheatre and Devils tooth as the path winds along the river course.

The Tugela gorge Trail takes us along the banks of the Tugela, once we are near the top of the gorge, near the base of the Tugela Falls, we will stop for a traditional hikers packed lunch. There's time to relax next to the clean clear waters of the Thukela River or even take a swim if the weathers good.

Your option for Vertical adventure begins after lunch. The highlight of this stunning walk is the abseil we set up at the top of the gorge. The freefall abseil is into one of the bigger river pools, its quite a thrill! During winter, the abseil has a totally dry landing, so there's no need to get cold in the icy mountain water, but in summer you have the option of taking a dip in a fresh mountain stream. After a stretch of boulder hopping and exploration in the gorge, we rejoin the path winding back along the Tugela river and return to the start.
